We asked thousands of personalities from around the raceways – drivers both past and present, promoters, race day officials, commentators, engine builders, fabricators, social media moderators, and everything in between to rank their top 10 banger drivers of all time with a twist. The rankings saw the top 3 in the respective orders awarded 5, 4 and 3 points, with all others in the top 10 receiving 1 point each. We also asked who they thought was the best banger driver currently active, and who the best driver to have raced bangers but to not be known for bangers is – perhaps a stock car ace or hot rod legend.

The top 100 sees names from all generations featured including 19 winners of the Unlimited World Final (Spedeworth) and 12 drivers that won the PRI World Championship – arguably the two biggest major titles in the business, alongside a multitude of title winners.

Before we get in to the in-depth analysis of the top 100, we will provide a run down of those that received votes but fell outside the list.

Thank you once again to all that voted.

=90th – 820 Martyn ‘Maggot’ Perkins – 7 points
Martyn has been a mainstay of the Spedeworth National scene for many years now. The man from Basingstoke now races in red, having previously been in yellow with comrades 45 Lips and 470 Nelson, and has had his fair share of big wrecks and wins over the years.
2007 Unlimited Chalk Challenge – Horndean
2012 2L Beech Memorial – Standlake
2014 Unlimited Jeff Woolford Memorial ‘Young Guns’ Winner – Aldershot
2016 Unlimited Spring Open – Ringwood

=90th – 623 ‘Tricky’ Ricky Hutton – 7 points
The TMT livewire has quickly become a popular figure around the ovals. His willingness to wreck everything and anything, including his own cars which often only see one meeting in them, has led to Tricky being deemed one of the most entertaining drivers of the modern era. Whilst members of the team around him have quietly slowed down since the closing of Arena Essex Raceway, Tricky has been a regular in Unlimiteds and 2 Litres up and down the country and has begun dabbling a little in to the 1600 Bangers also.
2015 2L Accumulator Champion – Mildenhall
2017 Nationals Kent Champion – Dover
2018 Nationals Masters Champion – Dover

=90th – 517 Scott Weldon – 7 points
Scott has been an instrumental figure in the southern scene. The Warlords driver is closely linked to tracks like Ringwood and Mendips, but has seen success all over the country; particularly in the ‘pre’ meeting events. One of many true ‘old school’ style racers that will feature on this list.

2014 WQ Points – Mendips
2017 1800 Reg Slack Memorial – Ringwood

=90th – 349 ‘Noddy’ Lewis Price – 7 points
Noddy has been one of the prominent faces in the Gladiators camp for several years now, being well involved in various wars and rivalries that the team have faced over the years taking big wrecks home and equally sending other drivers home with equal or bigger wrecks. Noddy remains an entertainer of the ovals, more commonly seen at the Banger World Series rounds these days Jaguar powered with his noddy mascot still sat pride of place on the roof of any car he races.

=90th – 327 Peter Miles – 7 points
Perhaps the first superstar of bangers. Peter was the first 2-time winner of the PRI World Championship in a time where the title was the biggest in the sport. He was a true showman with the perfect mix of racing and entertaining. Peter was one of the founders of ‘The Mafia’ team that took on the highly competitive Ahern Rats leading to an iconic team war.

=90th – 321 Brett ‘Wingnut’ Fry – 7 points
Wingnut was most notably known for his role in a very strong Bears team across the late 90s, 00s and 10s. He was renowned for his love affair of Cedrics, having raced over 40 in his career. The Bears travelled all across the UK, but it was Smallfield that was his spiritual home where he took the points title twice.
1995 Points – Smallfield
1996 South East Open – Smallfield
2000 Points – Smallfield

=90th – 271 Dean Goodearl – 7 points
Dean was a figurehead of most Arena Essex based teams across the years competing as part of Bad Company, Blue Crew and TMT among others. Although heavily involved in team wars, Deano showcased his driving ability on multiple occasions winning multiple titles being competitive in all classes.

=90th – 199 Jamie ‘Bona’ Wyatt – 7 points
Jamie is the only active member of the Posh Wash team to make the top 100. ‘Bona’ is labelled more as a wrecker but has highlighted at various points of his racing career that he certainly knows how to through a vehicle round an oval. He showcased those abilities particularly at the 2022 World Final where he won the first last chance race among other notable drives over the years.
2005 Unlimited West of England – Mendips
2009 Unlimited Crasharama – Taunton

=90th – 188 Matt ‘Smoker’ Fuller – 7 points
Matt had the ability to pilot anything he got in the seat of, but it was the Mk2 Ford Granada that brought him most of his success and where he really shined. Matt can sometimes be overlooked due to the sheer volume of talent that the Midnight Runners boasted in the mid 2000s – early 2010s, but his racing CV speaks volumes for the quality that we got to see from Smoker over the years.

+ 3x Arena Essex Chained Pairs Winner

=90th – 173 Steven ‘Hotsocks’ Reynolds – 7 points
Hotsocks has flown the flag for Ireland for many years being a regular at most big meetings over Europe for a few decades. He has had a variation of colours and teams over the years, including a stint in The Condoms, but it’s the orange and green that he is synonymous with. A man that loves his Toyota Crowns, as well as a hearse variant, we more commonly see Hotsocks Jaguar or Mercedes powered these days.

=90th – 87 Nick Linfield – 7 points
Nick loved an Austin 3 Litre and was always very quick in one. A star of the Spedeworth scene in the 80s and early 90s, Nick guided one of his Austin’s to the gold roof in 1981 at Wimbledon. Whilst that would live long in the memory, it was his tbone on 113 Carl Gallagher over the figure of 8 at Wimbledon in 1985 which saw him roll the Daimler Majestic Hearse of the Warriors driver which stood out as a fond moment for Nick.
1975 New Forest Champion – Ringwood
1979 English Figure of 8 Champion – Wimbledon
1980 English Figure of 8 Champion – Wimbledon
1981 King of the Fens – Wisbech
1981 Spedeworth World Championship – Wimbledon
1984 All Jaguars – Ipswich
1986 Frostbite Trophy – Aldershot

=90th – 21 ‘Mad Russ’ McAngus – 7 points
Russ is the first of many members from the Suicide Squad to make the order. He may have been dubbed ‘Mad Russ’ and that couldn’t have evident more so than at the Mark Boulden Memorial when he delivered that huge head on to Andy Davies that could probably be felt the other side of Thurrock, but he was also a dab-hand at getting a motor around the Essex oval having won their WQ Points on multiple occasions.

=87th – 210 Terry Harris – 8 points
Terry had a record breaking year in 1992 which saw him compete in 89 meetings, a record that took some doing and wouldn’t be matched until Joey Reynolds mammoth effort in 2019. Terry’s commitment saw him rewarded when he raced to the World Final win at Wimbledon at year later having previously taken the win in the National Championship at Hednesford in that impressive record-setting season.

1992 National Championship – Hednesford
1992 Spedeworth Points
1993 Spedeworth Points
1993 Spedeworth World Championship – Wimbledon
1993 Wimbledon Points

=87th – 180 ‘Sparky’ Mark Foster – 8 points
Sparky’s legacy will go down as one of the best wreckers of the modern era, and that is hard pressed to argue. The TGB man has, however, displayed his racing exploits on multiple occasions. Sparky was part of the impressive Midnight Runners dynasty that dominated the early Ford Mondeo era of racing, before joining his family members in forming Team Grey & Black where he enjoyed a brutal war against ex-MNR teammates in the form of the DWO boys. The Fosters have also had to come up against the likes of the Barton Boys, Team Jackpot and Team Allsorts over the years, with Sparky no stranger to getting stuck in to the thick of the action.

2012 2L CrashAttack – Skegness
2012 2L East of England – Skegness
2012 Unlimited Wreckfest – Skegness

=87th – 100 ‘Sat’ Karl Toole – 8 points
Sat won the last ever Blockbuster at Westworld, which he may have already told you. Karl championed Vauxhall Omegas at a very early stage, with all being Toyota Crown powered.
2004 Unlimited Blockbuster – Westworld

=79th – 724 Gus Carter – 9 points
Gus was an out and out entertainer. The famous BDMC livery adorned all vehicles, most of which would end up a lot more warped and battle scarred than they started the day. Most will remember his Nissan Patrol from the 2002 Blockbuster, or his run in with 249 Polo at the 1997 Autospeed World Final. Gus has made the odd appearance in recent times and reminds of the top spirited crasher from the 90s and 00s that we all remember.

=79th – 717 Jack Tuffen – 9 points
Jack has shown over the past 10 years or so his qualities around the ovals. He had been knocking on the door of a big win before eventually securing the gold in a dramatic finish at the 2023 Unlimited World Final, and followed that up with a second place finish his title defence. That title win adding to a growing list of victories.

=79th – 699 Stacey Holdsworth – 9 points
Stacey is the leading lady of the sport, regularly among the places and points. She came close to securing the Spedeworth Points a few seasons ago, and continues to impress on the ovals. The first Holdsworth we will see on the list, with father, 6 Mark, set to feature later within the order.
2012 1400 UK Open – Northampton
2018 Unlimited Mike Hook Memorial – Standlake
2019 2L Heartbreaker – Birmingham

=79th – 625 Joshua Gooch – 9 points

2018 Unlimited Open – Grimley
2019 Unlimited 3L Domestic – Aldershot
2020 Unlimited A1 Open – Standlake

=79th – 355 Mark Simmonds – 9 points
Mark is another one of those perfect all rounders. He could crash with the best of them when required; Team Mentals wars with Posh Wash and the Warlords over the years showcasing that. Not only could he deliver a hit, he let his racing do the talking when it mattered. A superb track record in World Finals saw him record multiple top ten finishes in the big race, taking the honours himself in 2002.

=79th – 318 Wilf Speak – 9 points
They don’t make them like Wilf anymore. An all round legend, Wilf has been a key member of the Team Stinkbridge faction. A driver that epitomes the definition of bangers – always entertaining, but like a duck to a water to any motor he jumps into. Wilf is highly regarded among his peers and it’s evident why.

=79th – 264 Mark ‘Wellard’ Welland – 9 points
There’s not many that have had the stranglehold over the Spedeworth banger scene like how Mark has. Consistency for Mark has been key over the years, with 5 points title wins – a 14 year gap between the last two highlighting how his capabilities behind the wheel didn’t fade as bangers progressed. Mark is certainly a master of his local track, Arlington, but has been a dab hand at any track on the Spedeworth radar. When the debate of the best drivers to have never won a World title comes around, Mark is always high among that list.

=79th – 82 Paul ‘Winkle’ Tompkins – 9 points
Winkle has most recently been plying his trade on the circuits in the pick-up truck series, but he still returns on occasion to compete in a banger and looks as comfortable as when he was racing on a full-time basis. Winkle took gold at Ipswich in 2009 and was a superb champion showcasing the roof all across Europe.

=73rd – 555 Roy Rawlins – 10 points
Roy’s character perhaps resonates more with fans rather than his on track antics, but Roy is a showman both and off the track. A brilliant entertainer of the PRI scene, Roy has had some top motors over the years alongside a superb testimonial weekend as a send off.
1996 Nationals Essex – Arena Essex

=73rd – 474 Matty Threlkeld – 10 points
Matty is one of the North’s finest. A very fast driver have won multiple titles over the years and regularly produced a top looking motor, especially when it came to a Granada. Matty had spells in Team V & Team Extreme before eventually going solo and was the trendsetter for the now band Imperial in which he put a top display in at the Psycho Axetinction meeting.

=73rd – 266 Martin Hooikammer – 10 points
Martin has certainly put the attention on himself, as well as the Emmen scene alongside his Team Maniacs teammates over the past few seasons with some top crashing and racing displays. Martin now favours a Jaguar X300 and has become more than familiar with guiding one seamlessly around the Dutch shaleway.

=73rd – 100 ‘The Cock’ Callum White – 10 points
Cock is an out and out entertainer. The Aftermath man has enjoyed a battle with Team Black over the years whilst being up for hitting anyone. He has shown on multiple occasions, especially on the shale at Kings Lynn, that he can get a car around the oval too – he’s just not bothered about taking the win!

=73rd – 13 Pieter ‘Peewee’ Liestra – 10 points
Peewee is one of the most popular figures to come from the continent. A material guru, he often took a car to a meeting that he knew would get a pasting for the crowd’s entertainment. His retirement meeting at Kings Lynn ranks highly among the discussion of top meetings from the modern era.

=73rd – 1 ‘Maai’ Maarten Steenbekkers – 10 points
It’s been a section of continental influence, with Maai also receiving 10 points. The RAL 6005 is another that emulates those sentiments mentioned about Peewee. Maai also loves a yank, although a slightly modern approach, and has had a heap load of them over his tenure. Maai’s testimonial at Kings Lynn was a superb meeting, celebrating his racing career as he looked to slow down to focus on his Dakar Rally Truck events. Maai is racing on a more frequent basis once again, with his focus looking set on the Unlimited World of Shale entertainer points which he currently leads off the back of some lively showings in his Checker Marathon Aerobus Cab, Oldsmobile Cutlass Hearse and Mk4 Chevrolet Caprice Hearse to date.

=71st – 294 Lee ‘Stuntman’ Hughes – 11 points
Lee is a multi-World champion that has won countless races up and down the country. An impressive CV highlights his dominance around Arena Essex and Ipswich in the late 00s – early 10s. He has represented both Midnight Runners and Condoms over the years getting involved in many team wars whilst still showcasing that driving ability.

=71st – 166 ‘Dogga’ Lee Dawson – 11 points
Dogga was a rated driver that won a lot of titles over the Northern scene as part of a very strong Stinkbridge team. Dogga is highly regarded among his peers for his care-free attitude to racing – he would always go after the best that a track had to offer as he viewed it unsportsmanlike to go after the little man that was building cars on their drive. Dogga was involved in many team battles, especially a well-documented rivalry with the Gone Gang, and whilst most of his racing days were spent crashing, he managed to claim a few titles along the way. We caught up with Dogga about his racing days in an in-depth look back during the COVID lockdown days.

=68th – 382 ‘Chubby’ Jack Foster Jnr – 12 points
Chubby stepped foot out of Ministox straight into the battlefield joining up with Team Black in the midst of their war with the Condoms. He has also represented Team Green and the Midnight Runners, before forming Team Grey & Black with his family members which has seen them trade blows with DWO and Barton Boys among others over the years. Chubby is always reliable for a race win too, there’s not many meetings when he doesn’t showcase his driving ability and he certainly knows how to get a Lexus around.

=68th – 77 ‘Aario’ Aaron Charles – 12 points
Aario has gained a lot of respect for his old school approach to Bangers in the modern era. He has spent the majority of his racing off the back of a transit crewcab, repairing seemingly trashed cars just to squeeze that extra bit of life out of them. His NSD attitude is refreshing in an era where people are coy of who they crash in to because they don’t want to upset the masses. Aario is a top entertainer, but shows at his adapted local of Standlake that he can guide a car around too with many race wins on the tricky Oxfordshire oval.

=68th – 76 Adam Maxwell – 12 points
Adam may be known as a Hot Rod lad, but has proved on any outing in a banger that he mix with the best of them. He survived oppo attacks to win the last chance in 2020, winning a last chance on World Final on two consecutive years to book his spot in the main race. It would be great to see the multi hot rod champion out in a banger more often.

=66th – 451 Willy Blackwell – 13 points
Willy has served up some huge hits over the years – the follow in on 999 Stormin Norman at the 2010 King of the Peak, the follow in on 321 Newton at the 2007 Wreckfest meeting and his shot on 886 Shades at the end 2008 Unlimited Icebreaker among those that spring to mind. =68th – 51 ‘The Duck’ James Licquorice – 13 points
You’ll be hard pushed to see a meeting where a beaming smile isn’t among James’ face. A top entertainer, James excels with top performances whenever he races. James races on a very tight budget, and still races from his garden rather than a big yard like many have, yet remains one of the most dedicated within the Trackstar scene. Despite his usual crashing exploits, James does enjoy a race now and then which highlights his ability to flick the switch between styles when required.

=63rd – 178 Kieran ‘Slim’ Bowman – 14 points
The Predators man rose to the top of the game off a combination of cool cars, top racing and crashing over the years. The 2L Shale World Final win was a crowning moment for him, having been knocking on the door of a big win for a while and to do so in front of a home crowd was the ultimate pay off. Slim did the double winning both the BWS Entertainers League & Trackstar Entertainers League in the same year, and then won the BWS version again last year. He appears to have moved on to the Saloon Stock Cars, but is expected to still feature at some of the ‘must do’ meetings. Slim has featured highly among our Caged! Awards over the years – here’s an interview with him after his Caged! Entertainer of the Year Award win in 2022.

The Warriors man was so confident of his abilities that he was wearing slippers when he piloted his Wolseley 6/110 to the win at the 1986 Spedeworth World Final. The Captain was a very capable driver among a strong crop of talent in the 80s Spedeworth/Smallfield scene. Sean still makes the odd appearance at ‘pre’ or one-make events and winds back the clock to give fans that level of nostalgic release.

Woka has represented two of the biggest teams from the Midlands with spells in both the Barton Boys and the Demons. Kingy had many synonyms in his racing days. A long missed legend of the sport, memories of Kingy are still discussed to this day. The word legend gets overused in this day and age, but perfectly sums Kingy up. Great cars, great performances, but most importantly, a great attitude. He was certainly a specialist of his local at Arlington. Racing truly lost one of the best when Kingy passed away.

=58th – 148 ‘Shorty’ Ian Redden – 16 points
Growing up, there wasn’t a much cooler site than Shorty throwing a car around on the shale. No matter the venue, he could throw a car around it! A slight Mandela effect may come into play here, as I distinctly remember Volvo 240 Estates being the tool for the job, but looking through photo archives it appears that throwing a Granada around was his preferred method. A driver that fits the true banger ‘racer’ tag – quite often Shorty will win a race and would have put his front bumper to effective use on route to that win; someone that knows when to spin, when to punt and when to fully get his crashing head on when required.

=54th – 885 ‘Mr Cumshot’ Morice Katier – 17 points
Morice is the highest ranked driver from the continent. The Boogiemen driver had been bridging the gap between the UK and Europe for many years with appearances over here in the 90s and early 00s and had been a key figure at Warneton, Emmen and other venues throughout Europe since then. He has given some of the biggest hits seen at those venues over the years, but has also had his fare share on the other foot too. The shots from 640 Hunter and 116 Klokkie springing to mind. A top entertainer, and it’s clear to see why he is rated highly among his peers.

=54th – 84 Tom ‘Twiggie’ Harris – 17 points
Predominately known for his BRISCA F1 exploits, few can deny that Tom is a seriously talented driver. Tom has won the F1 World Championship 5 times, yet still finds time in his busy schedule to make an outing in a banger every now and then, albeit a lot different to when he first started. Tom showcases his driving ability all over the world – World 240s in New Zealand, Sprint Cars at the Chilli Bowl and then back to the UK with outings in Saloon Stock Cars and BRISCA F2s also, there really isn’t much that Tom can’t drive.

=54th – 67 ‘Sparky’ Mark Whittaker – 17 points
Sparky has been an underrated driver for years having won countless titles up and down the country in all classes. Modern era, Sparky is more known for his appearances in the ‘pre’ events, but has shown his excellence across the board with World Cup wins, points titles and more.

The crop of talent that Spedeworth boasted over the 80s and 90s saw drivers that could mix winning races and crashing to a perfect level – Sticko could definitely meet that criteria. A 2-time English Champion, Sticko had plenty of material over his years including the first Austin 3 Litre Hearse.

Cokey is another like Sticko from that era that could do it all. 1988 was Cokey’s stand out year, capping it off with a World Final win in his Rover P5 at his first time of asking. Cokey has lead to a line of great drivers – the likes of 62 Webb and 625 Gooch along the family tree. Cokey is still competing to date, looking set to try his luck in the BWS Entertainers League.

=51st – 194 Steve ‘Cecil’ Anscombe – 20 points
Cecil doesn’t get the props he deserves. A true ambassador of the sport. His ‘rent a rookie’ service has introduced many people into the sport, or given drivers from other formulas the opportunity to have a taste of what Bangers are like. He has been part of the best group of drivers when he was a member of Team Blitz, and has since been a part of the Seasiders and now heads the popular Dreamers team that are more commonly associated with the Spedeworth 1600 scene. Cecil showcased his ability in the Nationals winning many titles, before switching to the 1600 Bangers which he has fully cemented his legacy in. Cecil has been part of many team wars, some of which are still prevalent on track nowadays. The likes of the Messhams, Dreambusters, Team Trim, Rude Boys and others. Cecil and his Dreamers team have also been documented as part of the Banger Boys on History TV.

Sid’s banger stint may have been short, but there’s not many others that have had the same degree of success in such a short period. Sid won the Unlimited World Championship twice, back to back, on his first two attempts at doing so – an unreal achievement and highlights his capabilities behind the wheel. Sid won other titles in his Banger time, as well as many in Saloon Stock Cars and it won’t be long before he sees success in his new venture, the BRISCA Formula 2 Stock Cars.

=49th – ‘Mad Malc’ Malcolm Girling – 21 points
Malcolm was one of EAs finest. A top talent of the 80s and early 90s Spedeworth scene, it took an illegal hit to stop him from winning the 1991 World Final after he was stopped through the driver’s door from a driver coming off the infield (who was driving depends on who you ask!). Malc enjoyed a wealth of success in his years racing, even in a time where the South v EA war was prominent.

=44th – 359 Geoff ‘GB’ Bowen – 22 points
Geoff’s motto was ‘let me entertain you’ and almost always delivered on that. GB had the ability to have a good race, but equally, had the ability to end someone else’s race in an instant. A driver that you couldn’t take your eyes off as he could just switch between modes in an instant – certainly not a driver you’d want to see behind you! Geoff also spent time in both the Saloon Stock Cars and 1300 Stock Cars.

=44th – 88 Alan ‘Speedy’ Read – 22 points
Captain welly boot! Speedy’s racing CV speaks volumes, having won at a varied collection of tracks. Speedy’s crowning moment came when he won the 1999 Unlimited World Final, the last to do so in a Jaguar, and opted to defend the title in a Mk2 Ford Granada Hearse which was trademark for him. Despite all of his various title wins, Speedy is the driver to have raced the most amount of hearses, but also had a keen liking for a Rover P5. He dominated the Trackstar Points scene, winning it 7 times over an 8 year period. His ‘Speedy Exit’ meeting being a standout meeting of the last 10 years.
