Ipswich – 8/10/22 – Unlimited Bangers World Championship – Meeting Report

The biggest night on the National Banger calendar, the Unlimited World Championship took place at Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich on Saturday 8th October. 224 cars in attendance, with the level of prep being unreal! There were 19 Mk1/2 Ford Granada variants including a Mk1 Limo, Estate and Coupe, as well as the Saloons. 278 Shaun Brokenshire piloted a Rover P5, all converted to Mercedes running gear. 162 Brent Shaw had a modern Chevrolet Caprice. The Gladiators had a trio of Jaguar X300 Limos for 174 Dave Osborne, 214 Connor Osborne and 747 Liam Hard. 222 Kieran Norton had a Ford Fairline Limo. The popular 211 Dennis Vorkink continued his form of various Volvo variants with a 264 TE which completed his set. 834 Jan Van Osch had a Chevrolet Impala Coupe. 617 Danny Everett and 777 Arian Vorkink had a pair of Volvo 9 Series Hearse, whilst 105 Billy Standing had a Limo variant. 347 Red Nelson had a Vauxhall Omega Hearse. 91 Sam Bartlett had a fresh Series III XJ and 355 Aaron Dark had a stunning Daimler Sovereign Series II XJ. 384 John Golden piloted a Jaguar 420G. Local lad 224 Lewis Canham bringing a Mercedes W210 Limosine.

Unfortunately 254 Steve Ryan and 597 Shane Lines pulled off before the green. 122 Mark Cooper Jnr sent 699 Aaron Nelson spinning. 580 Peter Bland had 763 Charlie Wilson around. 410 Jake Calvert spun 122 Cooper Jnr. 131 Harley McCarthy spun 528 Alan Hunt. 162 The Viking spun 580 Wilf. A sort out along the back straight saw 229 Sean Riddell remove 920 Terry Church. 181 Grant Doe turned 229 Riddell fence-wards in turn before Doe himself, and 122 Cooper Jnr were turfed onto the shale. 174 David Osborne set about 699 Aaron Nelson, as 181 Doe spun 410 Calvert. 101 Cieran Harmer had a pop at 726 Sam Bye. 214 Connor Osborne spun 333 Charlie Randell. 122 Cooper Jnr delivered a head on to 333 Chaz. 763 Wilson ran into 122 Cooper Jnr, the latter jacked in turn by 410 Calvert. 162 Viking went in on 763 Wilson, as 199 Jamie Wyatt bested 33 Magic for the lead. 214 Osborne blitzed 410 Calvert. 941 Jimmy Matthews laid into 291 Seanie Bell, before the lively 181 Doe spun 494 Jack Harris. 323 Dean Kelly attacked 726 Sambo on oppo. 101 Charmer jacked 763 Wilson as 199 ‘Bona’ booked his spot on the World Final grid with a top win from 444 Charlie Jackson and 634 Ben Green.

Dutch travellers 101 Klaas Troost and 601 Richard Goodholt found themselves off the front row for Last Chance 2. 164 Barry Sedgwick got battered by the pack as he was spun early doors. 222 Matty High spun 50 Joey Mullady. A pile up along the home straight claimed several, before 50 Ginger Joey followed in 306 Marc Doughty. 617 Danny Everett jacked 611 Joe Geeves, creating another Mk1 Granada for the scrapyard. 390 Dan Stacey spun 347 Red Nelson. 199 Kris Clifford attacked 648 Jamie Smith, the latter backing his attacker up the armco. 834 Jan Van Osch jacked 199 Clifford. 777  Arian Vorkink jacked 306 Chunky, and was leathered in turn by 834 Balletje. 69 Harry Steward punted 284 James Head wide to take the lead, as 174 Tom Lindgren followed 41 Lee Barnes in, the latter falling out of his seat bringing the red flags out, but not before 224 Lewis Canham homed in for a hit. ‘Looney Lee’ managed to exit under his own steam after a couple of minutes. 69 Steward lead them away from the green, with 284 Heady and 111 Joe Cotton in tow. 69 Steward spun the back marking 174 Lindgren to try and maintain his charge. 777 Vorkink delivered an oppo attack to 174 Lindgren, which allowed 69 Steward enough to escape 284 Heady’s clutches and take the chequered flag. Steward failed post race checks due to a missing one-way valve, meaning 284 James Head took the spot in the main race. 174 Lindgren concluded the race by laying into 777 Vorkink well on the reds.

617 Jack Overy found himself off of pole in the third last chance, with 91 Sam Bartlett also making up the front row. You’d be hard pushed to bet against Overy from there, especially with the electric start he made. Several drivers pulled up onto the shale before the green flag fell including 838 Jamie Peters, 883 Jack Filmer, 747 Liam Hard and 143 Dan Rose. 146 Davey O’Connor and 238 were early spinners. 195 Reece Marsh and 16 Jack Wheatley tangled, with 99 Scott Gough going in on 16 Jackal Jnr. 399 Jonny Atkin spun 221 Justin Riley. 67 Rickie Beasley jacked 221 Motormouth and was collected in turn by 623 Ricky Hutton. 884 Tom Filmer done 221 Motormouth as the reds came out due to 16 Jackal Jnr rolling along the home straight. The front row got away once again on the restart. 962 Josh Pidgeley set about 53 Luke Needs. 146 Davey spun 252 Nemo Llewelyn. 84 Jack Ansell turned 205 Alex Ganter aside, as 67 Beasley turned 555 Harry Gelsthorp left. 130 Joe Gladden looked very quick making his way through the field, spinning 91 Sam Bartlett for second place. 195 Reece Marsh got spun left on the back straight and collected 67 Beasley in a big way as he rejoined, sending the Team Black man air bound into a 180 spin. 45 Anthony Crowshaw delivered a solid head on to 67 Beasley. Down on the scoreboard bend, 121 Leo Riley followed in 962 Pidgeley. 99 Goffy shed his outside front wheel as 521 Ashley Riley turned 662 Jamie Harding left. 355 Aaron Dark jacked 962 Pidgeley, with 252 Nemo also going in on the TYB driver. 884 Filmer drove through 252 Nemo before the reds came out for 962 Pidgeley. 617 Jack Overy lead from 130 Joe Gladden and National Hot Rod star 175 Hayden Ballard. 91 Bartz turned 332 Chris Reed left whilst 102 Clayton Wheeler had 592 Mark Marchant around. 662 Harding ran in 355 Dark. 211 Jamie Pole ran 238 Mark Wareham into 355 Dark which also claimed 146 Davey, leaving the latter sat prone along the home straight. 129 Joe Skutela leathered 146 Davey. 175 Ballard spun 592 Marchant before 662 Harding attacked 91 Bartz on oppo. 91 Bartz diverted to the infield claiming 21 Dean Tompkins and 102 Bokie. 238 Wareham went in on 662 Harding. 246 Ryan Sparks removed 130 Gladden. Just after the Union Jack flag had flown to signify the half way stage, the leading 617 Overy suffered mechanical gremlins which saw him rattle the plating and crash into 662 Harding. 884 Filmer jacked 617 Overy as 747 Hard tboned 662 Harding. 238 Wareham jacked 747 Hard. 129 Square Head delivered a stiff shot to 617 Overy before the reds were out again due to 662 Harding’s harness coming lose. 175 Ballard headed the field at this point from 84 Peach and 516 Carl Gould. It was 4 laps remaining at the drop of the green, with 516 Gouldy soon muscling his way past 84 Peach to head in to second – 307 Martin Kent also getting the better of the 84 machine. 516 Gouldy took his opportunity to strike with a lap to go, lunging 175 Ballard wide to take the lead where he remained to book his spot on the World Final grid.

Decent Mk2 Granada wreck for 146 Davey O’Connor

The 2022 Unlimited Bangers Championship of the World saw 243 Pete Osborne on pole with 739 Jason Moore alongside. Looking along the grid there were several strong candidates off the front of the grid, with defending and two-time champion 217 Madgwick starting from 9th. 114 Liam Lake found himself between a Bugler sandwich.

A minute’s applause for legendary Spedeworth official Ray Wood was proceeded by ‘The Show Must Go On’. Graham Woodward uttered the famous ‘drivers start your engines’ before a series of pyrotechnics filled the Suffolk sky. The grid completed two rolling laps under the fireworks; 611 Ghostrider suffered a spin before making it to the start line as the green flag dropped. 166 Armstrong and 88 Mulder collected the armco. 252 Boogie put 114 Lakey away, which saw 830 Stretch and 299 Callaghan go spinning also. 356 Overy ran 28 Jamesie into 114 Lakey’s front wheel. 166 Armstrong was all over the place along the home straight which caused a big push into turn 1 with 278 Bean at the back in his P5 pushing with 456 Roberts, 348 Mushy, 440 Lemon, 341 Jonesey, 166 Armstrong and 887 Browning all crashing out, the latter making hard impact with the armco. 456 Roberts backed across the track looking to rejoin swiftly, doing so ahead of the front runners seeing 243 Bodja, 123 Hairline, 741 Daniels, 570 Dino Jnr crash out onto the shale in avoiding action. 739 Meerkat had the early lead from 388 Little Stevo and defending champion 217 Madgwick. 455 Finney stuffed 639 Tye Pirate fence-wards which spun 360 Jackstar in turn. 360 Jackstar backed 278 Bean up to the fence. 60 Laurie got punted wide and held up with Tye Pirate. 460 Big Dog slid into 166 Armstrong. 341 Jonesey spun 717 Tuffen and 440 Big Mac. 372 Matthews spun 16 Fagass. 100 Cock spun under pressure from 4 Wildy. 114 Lakey buried 107 Pratchett. 455 Finney spun 548 Big Al. 830 Stretch got ran into the side of 548 Big Al by the pack. 114 Lakey spun 199 Bona into 830 Stretch. Up front, the battle for the lead really hotted up with 739 Meerkat, 388 Stevo and 217 Madgwick all within touching distance of one another. 388 Stevo bested 739 Meerkat for the lead with a move around the outside. 741 Daniels had a pop at 16 Fagass, spinning himself. 331 Boxer Jack removed 328 Lathan. 123 Hairline turned 516 Gouldy left along the home straight. 360 Jackstar dispatched 114 Lakey, which worked wonders for 388 Little Stevo opening a big gap for him. 278 Bean removed 88 Mulder, who was collected over the front wheel by 341 Jonesey. 60 Laurie dumped 252 Boogie fence-wards. 262 Roona attacked 114 Lakey. 243 Bodja turned 327 Little Legs left. 211 Mister Nös spun 348 Mushy and 199 Bona did the same to 455 Finney. 717 Tuffen followed 331 Boxer Jack in, which had a monumental effect on the order seeing second and third placed 739 Meerkat and 217 Madgwick were caught up too. 625 Gucci drove through 739 Meerkat. 440 Big Mac homed in for a front wheel shot to 331 Boxer Jack. 372 Matthews spun 60 Laurie which took out 16 Fagass also. Fagass backed across turn 1 and was driven through by 639 Tye Pirate. 211 Mister Nös buried 739 Meerkat. 717 Tuffen put bumper in on 460 Big Dog sending him up the curb. 247 Bro rattled 158 Davies in on the turnstile bend and then spun him at the end of the home straight. 77 Aario spun 28 Jamesie. 222 Riddell turned 252 Boogie aside. 639 Tye Pirate spun 459 Platts. 178 Slim followed 211 Mister Nös into the car graveyard. 639 Tye Pirate spun 77 Aario. 243 Bodja spun whilst challenging for second place, but luckily had a big window to rejoin so kept third place. 388 Stevo McGrath raced to a fantastic win, the joy he felt being demonstrated by punching the air. 211 Mister Nös delivered an oppo attack to 60 Laurie, with 360 Jackstar delivering a rear wheel shot to 211 Mister Nös. Stevo winning by nearly half a lap over 400 Lee Kingsnorth; 243 Pete Osborne and 247 Lee Clarke seeing off the top four.

The ‘Cash or Card’ race concluded the meeting with both Alcomers winners off the front of the grid. 726 Sambo spun 229 Sean Riddell. 166 Armstrong ran 312 White into the spun 229 Riddell. 372 Matthews spun 625 Gucci, as others fell by the wayside. 747 Hard caught the leading 32 Reedy Jnr as he passed, allowing 4 Wildy to take up the running. 275 Rusty had sparks flying from under his car as he got caught up with the rear bumper from 61 Hendrik’s Mk1 Granada Limo. 521 Ace Ash rattled in 725 Sibbs under the scoreboard. 639 Tye Pirate spun 208 Collins. As the racing continued on track, Damage Inc and The Condoms traded blows on the shale, with the familiar orange and black getting the upper hand. 838 Sloth attacked second-placed 639 Tye Pirate on oppo. 455 Finney delivered a rear wheel shot to 838 Sloth and 262 Roona did the same to 639 Tye Pirate. 440 Big Mac and 828 Sharpey crashed into Tye Pirate. 341 Jonesey ran 548 Big Al and 455 Finney into 356 Overy on the shale as the reds came out. 699 Stacey Holdsworth taking the win and opting to book her place in next year’s World Final with the wildcard.

A superb showcase by both the drivers and Spedeworth of proper banger racing; a fine mix of rodding and wrecking. It truly is a spectacle and we look forward to next year’s event already.
