The buzz of World Final night is unrivalled. The appreciation of the crowd walking around of the efforts and level of prep that goes in to the cars by the drivers and teams behind the scene is evident on faces all around the pits. There’s not quite an event that showcases the top level of our sport quite like it. It’s the race that most drivers want to be in, and the majority of those want to win it, so it’s to be expected that Ford Scorpios and Mercedes W210s, although the Mercedes now being the dominant car of the night. The Jaguar X300 has become more popular over the past couple of years, but there are still drivers that like to bring a bit of variety to the night. The continental contingent in the main race certainly delivered on that front. 337 Giel Koorn had the car of the night with his 1965 Chrysler New Yorker. Vorkink brothers 211 Dennis and 777 Arian had a pair of Volvo 2 Series Hearses, whilst ASE Entertainer Champion 24 Mark de Laat had a Mk2 Ford Granada Hearse. Local man 224 Lewis Canham had a fresh Mk2 Ford Granada whilst Equalizers man 455 Hayden Hawes opted for a Mk1 variant. 384 John Golden was at the hands of a raw-look Jaguar XJ Series II, whilst 92 Lee Edwards and 353 Sean Mullins had a Series III variant.

414 Jimmy Craig claimed the illustrious pole position on his debut World Final appearance with BRCM man 440 Macauley Mills sharing the front row with him. After all finalists made their way on to the track one-by-one, the grid lined up as per the out-of-the-hat draw. Defending champion 717 Jack Tuffen suffered mechanical issues upon lining up and was allocated 5 minutes in order to try and resolve those issues – a driveshaft being the problem and he managed to rectify with moments to spare. The standard two rolling laps proceeded with Terry Newell playing the usual medley of ‘Get Ready For This,’ ‘Sandstorm,’ and of course, ‘Mouldy Ol’Dough;’ the pyrotechnics filling the Suffolk sky at the drop of the green flag. It was 673 Darren Fendley who soon broke into the lead. 548 Alex Utting didn’t take long to lay into 129 Joe Skutela, which also sent 133 Ben Wyatt fence-wards. 506 Danny Mitchell bounced 341 Andrew Jones off the turn 2 armco. Mitchell himself catapulting across the pack, duly being spun by 570 Jordan Cumming. The race begun to settle down a little with 673 Fendley leading from 414 Craig, 440 Big Mac and 717 Tuffen; nothing separating the leading quartet at this stage. 24 Devastator showed why he was ASE Entertainer Champion as he followed in 278 Shaun Brokenshire, the latter getting collected on the nose by 69 Brad Bartram. 100 Callum White attacked 337 Gielles, with 58 Joe Brown running 24 Devastator into Gielles. 673 Dazza’s engine begun to smoke considerably as he dropped down the order around the time the Union Jack flag was raised signalling the half way point. 414 Craig now leading from 717 Tuffen and the struggling 673 Dazza. 129 Joe Skutela went on oppo connecting with a stiff head on to 247 Lee Clarke on the exit of turn 4. 58 Brown weighed in on Bro. This claimed 186 Lewis Fasey and 348 Sonny Sherwood who were among a few drivers falling foul in the skirmish between the Condoms and Damage Inc rivals. 51 James Licquorice weighed in on 129 Square Head. 673 Dazza was still struggling with his engine, eventually seeing it expire completely. 456 Nathan Roberts had a pop at 717 Tuffen, which saw the latter lose considerable ground on the leading 414 Craig. 77 Aaron Charles set about 526 Jak Denikiewicz before 838 Jamie Peters spun the limping 327 Mick Maskell Jnr aside – Maskell nearly rolling across the curb. 222 Riddell spun 440 Big Mac who was struggling with a puncture, as 69 Brado and 887 Robert Browning spun onto the shale just behind. The later stages saw 623 Tricky spin 456 Roberts and 77 Patxi Beasley set about 100 Cock. 414 Jimmy Craig looked very comfortable up at the front of proceedings, and he saw the race out to take the win, his only ever National Banger win and what a time to pull that out of the bag! He parked up on turn 3 and took a moment to soak it all in before celebrating to much applause from the crowd a top of his Mercedes W210. Many drivers then coming across to congratulate Jimmy including outgoing champion 717 Tuffen who had driven to a comfortable second place; albeit around half a lap behind Jimmy at the point of the chequers. 639 Tye Williams was another to congratulate Jimmy. Tye himself taking third place after romping up the order from 47th on the grid. 838 Jamie Peters had been regarded as one of the best entertainers of the season heading into World Final, but drove his heart out to take 4th place and the final podium spot.

A superb three-way battle broke out for the lead for the last 6 laps. 262 Roona put in a top defensive drive, closing the door on the 459 Platts and 887 Browning as they went past the melee on turn 3. Browning took his opportunity to strike on the last lap, punting Roona wide on turn 1. Roona looked to get back on the pair with a last bend lunge but it wasn’t enough to dislodge them off their line with Platts attempting to spin Browning whilst holding off an attempt on him from Roona as they went down the home straight to take the chequered flag.
