Saturday 2nd October 2021, the biggest date of the year on the banger calendar, but unfortunately, also one of the wettest! The Unlimited Bangers Championship of the World took place once again at Foxhall Stadium, with 196 drivers braving the elements.
The paint efforts were once again sublime, with it being very difficult to judge who’s was the ‘best’, with the level of competition being too high. There were 13 Mk2 Ford Granadas on display, with only 4 of these being used, whilst 528 ‘Jethro’ Alan Hunt had the sole Mk1 Ford Granada. 639 Tye Williams had a stunning Mk9 Jaguar to mark his debut in the main race. 162 Brent Shaw impressed as usual with a Ford Scorpio Limo, whilst 557 Daniel Wilson went for more length with his Mk3 Lincoln Town Car Limo. 246 Aston Burt impressed with a stunning Daimler Sovereign XJ Coupe, probably the night’s top motor considering the rarity of it alongside 114 Liam Lake’s stunning Toyota Custom Crown Coupe.

Three last chances started the evenings proceedings, 549 Smiffy Jnr and 739 Meerkat finding themselves on the front row for LCQ 1. The traditional ‘let’s go racing’ was bellowed by Graham Woodward before the rolling lap begun. 32 Reedy Jnr spun 107 Pratchett as 557 Wilson used his limo to bury 752 Huffy. Several drivers got sent flying across the shale, including 449 Critt who was spun by 542 Oliver. 876 Ron jacked 557 Wilson as 32 Reedy Jnr tangled with 328 Nichols, both then collecting the pile of cars on the turnstile bend. 595 Drew Boy got carried the length of the home straight by the pack before being collected by 85 Ellis. 466 Dalto buried 45 Lips into the melee. 549 Smiffy Jnr turned 623 Tricky fence-wards. 502 Dipper jacked 941 Matthews, before 739 Meerkat dispatched 801 Foster. 284 Heady tboned the spun 4 Wildy amongst the carnage with 349 Guppy Jnr also coming a cropper. The red flags then came out, although the reason unknown. 549 Phil Smith headed 195 Reece Marsh and 298 Sam Wyatt at this stage. The restart saw 195 Marsh right on the tail of 549 Smiffy Jnr as they opened a bit of a gap. 211 Poley removed 876 Ron. 739 Meerkat spun under pressure from 466 Dalto. The Union Jack flag flew to signal the half way point, with 195 Marsh taking his opportunity to dive up the inside of 549 Smiffy Jnr and take the lead from the Gladiators man. 195 Marsh dealt with the lurking 107 Pratchett and the lurking 57 Dino who was sat on oppo on turn 2. 623 Tricky delivered a head on to 57 Dino, the latter copping a heavy tbone from 211 Poley as he looked to back on to the shale. 390 Dazza drove through 876 Ron, which caused 195 Marsh to take a wider line in avoidance, allowing 549 Smiffy Jnr to strike and spin the Barton Boys driver to reclaim the lead. The reds came out to assist 876 Ron, but this didn’t stop 801 Foster from driving through 195 Marsh. 549 Smiffy Jnr lead them away on the restart once again from 91 Bartlett and 298 Showman. 32 Reedy Jnr passed 298 Showman for third, looking rapid as he moved up the order. 224 Canham spun 739 Meerkat towards the back of the grid. 32 Reedy Jnr chased down 549 Smiffy Jnr, delivering a well timed last bend lunge to take the win and book his spot on the grid – 589 Gonna properly hindering his brother more, eventually sending him fence-wards off of the last bend antics.

LCQ2 placed 21 Tompkins and 105 Bill Bob on the front row. Unfortunately 123 The Traveller had to pull off before the rolling lap commenced. 162 The Viking was sent around straight away taking in 525 Andrews and 133 Terz with him. 782 Gladis delivered a head on to 162 The Viking. 62 Lewis crashed in to the pile on the turnstile bend and was duly jacked by 842 Perkins. 66 Geary delivered an oppo attack on 331 Boxer Jack slowing his charge. 617 Everitt jacked 782 Gladis, and was leathered in turn by 291 Bell. A sort out along the back straight saw 514 Eighteen go spinning across the shale and 281 A Pole send 27 Ooze Boy fence-wards. 299 Callaghan collected 118 Chapman which resulted in 562 Baker running 199 Shaydy through the side of Chapman. 842 Perkins jacked 562 Baker. 444 Chaz had a pop at the leading 247 Bro along the back straight, but barely hindered him. 143 Rose and 66 Geary tangled which caused the leading 247 Bro some difficulty, allowing 552 Street to land a blow on the Damage Inc man. 84 Peach drove through 143 Rose before 842 Perkins thundered 291 Bell into 199 Shaydy. The lively 842 Perkins continuing his momentum to jack 62 Lewis. The red flags came out, which was probably guttering for 247 Bro who had opened up a big lead considering he had numerous rivals out on track. 741 Daniels and 648 Smithy were next in the order as the race drew a pause in proceedings. 444 Chaz took out 76 Reject. 148 Shorty removed 382 Hutchings on the back straight before 66 Geary took another try at stopping 331 Boxer Jack.
105 Bill Bob dived at the leading 247 Bro, spinning him out, which allowed 552 Street to come off the middle and drive through the latter. 247 Bro met 514 Eighteen on the nose, with 525 Andrews going in also. 741 Daniels ran out of road and caught 514 Eighteen, scampering his chances of winning. 133 Terz boned 514 Eighteen and 148 Shorty drove through 741 Daniels as the pair battled for the lead and looked to find a way through. 281 A Pole delivered a head on to 247 Bro, with 111 Cotton Eye driving through the former ripping his passenger front wheel off. 247 Bro attempted to stop 331 Boxer Jack, who was closing in on the leading 148 Shorty. 514 Eighteen and 27 Ooze Boy ensured that Bro wouldn’t be a problem for their team mate with consecutive shots on oppo. 514 Eighteen delivered a head on to 247 Bro. As 148 Shorty crossed the line to take the two lap board, 331 Boxer Jack was right there with him and punted him into turn 3 to take up the running. 382 Hutchings and 514 Eighteen had a set about on the scoreboard bend, with ? coming off the middle and driving through 382 Hutchings. This caused 331 Boxer Jack to slow allowing 148 Shorty to successfully execute a wild lunge and spin the Midnight Runner. In a world of his own, Shorty coasted round to take the chequers to great crowd ovation. 331 Boxer Jack clearly furious with the outcome delivered a dirty front wheel shot to 247 Bro to conclude the action.

28 Jamesie and 82 Beasley formed the front row for LCQ3. 67 Beasley sent 224 Gamble spinning straight away. 21 Robbo had 500 Mullady around which claimed 585 Holdsworth. 53 Dreamer spun under pressure from 510 Newman. 99 Goffy spun in front of the leading 28 Jamesie, allowing 592 Marchant to move in and spin the latter. 124 Oris took a dive at 69 Randall, taking the pair of them and 224 Gamble into the armco. 92 Bartlett ran head on into 69 Randall as 622 Loopy put the roof up on 124 Oris’ Mercedes. 124 Oris tried to stop second placed 67 Beasley on oppo, but instead copped a dooring from 323 Tweed. 32 Podge removed 201 Turk, but was spun in turn by 362 Drifter. The red flags came out with 4 laps to run, with one of 323 Tweed or 124 Oris requiring attention. 751 Wells looked to open up his gap again at the front on the drop of the green, with 32 Podge spinning 53 Dreamer towards the back of the pack. 67 Beasley and 28 Jamesie squabbled for second which allowed 751 Wells to get some breathing room. He remained unchallenged and counted down the last couple of laps to secure the win and complete the grid for the World Final.

It was the turn of the main race, which featured 4 previous winners of the event and 11 debutants. Crimond seed 222 Colin Riddell found himself on pole alongside Autospeed entertainer 278 Sean Brokenshire. 217 Sid Madgwick was given a golden opportunity to defend his title drawing fourth on the grid, alongside one of the tipped favourites 717 Jack Tuffen.
217 Sid Madgwick was the first out on track in seriously smart Mk2 Ford Granada and completed his obligatory final lap of honour before being handed his plaque. 114 Liam Lake followed on track in his beautiful chameleon painted Toyota Custom Crown Coupe and was presented his trophy for the Entertainers Points. 570 Jordan Cumming was presented his trophy for the Mildenhall Points title and 717 Jack Tuffen his for the Spedeworth Points before the rest of the grid came out as normal.
Two formation laps set the pace, with the torrential conditions cruelly claiming 548 Big Al and 440 Big Mac before the off. The fireworks launched into the skies as the green flag fell. 506 Mitchell and 601 Mr V8 were early spinners. 327 Maskell Jnr was turned fence-wards by 222 Riddell and then done head on by 199 Matti. 246 Burty Jnr homed in for a big hit on 327 Maskell Jnr, as 601 Mr V8 drove through 506 Mitchell as the latter dived for safety. Defending champion 217 Madgwick lead 717 Tuffen at this stage although it was still early days. Tuffen took up the running as 217 Madgwick had to dive to the shale to avoid the lame 601 Mr V8 along the home straight; visibility definitely tricky out on track. A sort out along the back straight saw several fell foul. 699 Stacey, 215 Murph, 16 Fagass and 516 Gouldy included among the chaos. 209 Tombo delivered a stiff shot to 16 Fagass. The red flags came out to attend to a driver along the back straight, which appeared to be 516 Carl Gould. After a few minutes, Gouldy climbed out on his own steam albeit limping slightly. The tele-porter cleared the way and it was back under racing conditions. 717 Tuffen lead 278 Bean and 217 Madgwick. The stoppage meant that a lot of surface water was laying on the track, with nearly a lake on the inside line on the scoreboard bend. 217 Madgwick bested 278 Bean for second and then punted 717 Tuffen on to take the lead, the latter getting tangled up with 639 Tye Pirate halting his chances. 455 Finney put away 24 Devastator and was driven through himself by 440 Lemon. 400 Kingsnorth collected 455 Finney on the nose. 246 Burty Jnr homed in for a head on to the spun 24 Devastator. 488 Ziggy spun 317 Stress. 817 Stig drove through 246 Burty Jnr and was then spun off the raceway by 278 Bean. Madgwick continued to lead at the half way stage and was really ramping up the pace at this point, nearly a straight ahead of second placed 278 Bean. 360 Jackstar removed 171 Westy Jnr. 440 Lemon spun under pressure from 114 Lakey and 217 Madgwick. With 5 laps to go, 217 Madgwick had a clear margin at the front ahead of 456 Roberts and 252 Boogie. A faultless drive saw 217 Sid Madgwick take the win, securing the World Championship for the second year in a row, the first time this was done since 2007 and only the second driver behind 393 Darwin Melbourne to win on both the first and second occasion. 252 Steven Buglar secured second place, a fine drive from 52nd on the grid, 570 Jordan Cumming in third and 625 Joshua Gooch in fourth, all three of them securing their best ever finish in the main event.

A change of format saw the Alcomers race scrapped due to the horrific weather conditions, so there was a little wait before the Wildcard race. 362 Drifter and 4 Wildy set them away. 247 Bro, who had worked wonders to get his Mercedes repaired, immediately went on oppo. 557 Wilson came to a stop in his Limo at the end of the home straight. 158 Davies obliged to home in for a head on to 247 Bro, 834 Balletje immediately jacking the Condoms legend. 500 Mullady had 111 Cotton Eye around. 488 Ziggy drove through 557 Wilson as 834 Balletje again leathered 158 Davies. 488 Ziggy jacked 158 Davies, with 243 Bodja jacking the Bonös man. 648 Smithy destroyed 24 Devastator with a solid hit on turn 1. 834 Balletje leathered 243 Bodja. 500 Mullady spun under pressure from 617 Overy and was collected by 362 Drifter. 834 Balletje boned the life out of 557 Wilson and was done in turn by 262 Roona. 284 Heady spun the back marking 500 Mullady, who was still sat broadside on the turnstile bend as 4 Wildy came round to take the chequers. This allowed 284 Heady and 617 Overy to get the bumper in – Overy ending up spinning 284 Heady as 4 David Wilde secured the win and booked his spot into the 2022 World Final. 284 Heady managed to get across the line, albeit sideways alongside 500 Mullady with 123 Hairline pushing; 625 Gucci managing to sneak his way past into third for a good night of results for him.

Overall, a fantastic show of bangers elite racing. A superb effort once again by all drivers and their teams, even more so to go against the elements. Hats off to the Spedeworth team and their OrangeArmy officials for still putting on a spectacle in what can only be described as horrific rain conditions, and also to those spectators that stood in the downpour through to the end.
